Sphex cognatus

Description:

Length 20-25mm. Black with golden hairs on face, golden or silver hairs on thorax & a thin waist.

Habitat:

Prefers open sandy areas. Widespread through northern, eastern & sth eastern Australia, New Guinea & Asia. Females often nest together in sandy soil. Nest is a burrow with several chambers branching from the main tunnel. One wasp larva develops in each chamber, feeding on several katydids collected by the female wasp. Adults feed on nectar.
