Brusnik wall lizard

Podarcis melisellensis pomoensis

Description:

This subspecies of Podarcis melisellensis is endemic to the island of Brusnik (Croatia). Special about this lizard is that it is black instead of brown with a green back. This subspecies is slightgly larger than the others because it eats a lot more. There are some explanations for the advantage of being melanistic. One of them is that black lizards have an advantage in thermoregulation because they warm up more quickly (but there is a trade-off because black lizards are more easily seen by predators). It is also possible that their degree of feeding is the explanation for its black colour, because there might be a link between melanization and degree of feeding.

Habitat:

Rocky habitat with bushes
