Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

About the size of a Red-tailed Hawk, but colored as shown with distinctively banded tail for a buteo.

Habitat:

Outskirts of a rural town, with mostly agricultural fields and fragmented hardwood forest. Near a large reservoir.

Notes:

Only the one individual was seen. The temperature was -4° F, mid-morning. Several different kinds of small songbirds were in the immediate vicinity as well. Map location is estimated.
