Coyote

Canis latrans

Description:

Hiking in Elk City only to spot a coyote in a valley below the cliffs. I was looking for songbirds and came across one of Southeast Kansas remaining large (ish) predators. Luckily for me I was in a group and we were upwind. Coyote attacks are rare and also rarely result in serious injury, but caution is always key. Was surprised to see one out during daylight hours.

Habitat:

Coyotes are everywhere. They're also moving into urban areas due to human encroachment and are viewed as a pest in those areas due to attacks on pets. I like them though, they're just animals, not evil.
