Cecropia moth

Hyalophora cecropia

Description:

Large female Giant Silkworm moth (Saturnid family).

Habitat:

Rural

Notes:

Host plants are deciduous trees and shrubs including apple, ash, beech, birch, elm, oak maple and willow. I found this female in Athens OH 30 minutes south of my home next to the doorway of a Verizon building in town. I brought her home and later that afternoon she dropped ova for me. I released her the next night so she could finish ovipositing in the wild. I was very fortunate that the ova were fertile and hatched.
