Indian flying fox

Pteropus giganteus

Description:

Named for its physical similarity to a fox, the Indian flying fox has reddish brown fur and the shape of its head is similar to a fox. These bats are one of the largest of all bats and have a wingspan of more than 4 feet (1.2 meters). Its head and body length ranges from 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters). These bats have prominent claws that they use to move through trees and branches. The Indian flying fox lives in tropical forests and swamps, where there is a large body of water nearby. Notes:

I spotted this colony while on a morning walk around the lake in central Kandy, Sri Lanka. Many were flying back from the nearby jungle to roost.
