Description:

The family Tabanidae is called March fly in Australia. This particular species is large - 18mm - and has a very annoying persistently attacking habit. It stings people and other mammals with a long piercing mouth part. In this shot you can see it well implanted into thick cotton jeans.

Habitat:

Suburban back yard.

Notes:

The stabbing mouth part is like the blade for a power jigsaw. The males are smaller and much more furry. Family Tabanidae.
