Chilean Flamingo

Phoenicopterus chilensis

Description:

Native to South America. Large Flamingo species on the endangered list. Pink body, with gray legs and pink joints and feet. Black primaries and secondaries. Black on lower half of the curved bill. Pale pink eyes on a pale pink head and neck. Darker color pink comes from on algae, plankton and brine shrimp that it filters through it's bill.

Habitat:

Found in the salt ponds of a wildlife preserve feeding on brine shrimp

Notes:

This lone bird has been spotted moving to both sides of the bay. Unsure if this is an escapee from Marine World when it was located in Redwood City or from a collector. These birds could live to up to 45 years
