Hmm that doesn't narrow too much, but usually only moths lay eggs together so I'd say they are some sort of moth caterpillar. Perhaps cecropia, Luna, or Polyphemus.

This was quite far from any trees, but there were a few maples, oaks, and locusts in the distance.
