American Alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

Medium-sized alligators

Habitat:

In a canal along an access road in the Everglades west of Homestead, FL. The water was very green and murky. There were about 50 of them along a mile-long stretch in this non-populated (at least by humans) area.

Notes:

When they saw us (I was with my mom and uncle), they swam toward us and it was a little scary. We threw a big grasshopper in the water and they all started snapping at it. The grasshopper wound up sitting on top of the head of one of the gators, out of biting range. :-) It was like Gatorland without any fences.
