Australian grapevine moth - female

Phalaenoides glycinae

Description:

A black moth with a wingspan of about 50mm. On the upper-side the forewings had two broad horizontal bars and smaller white bars closer to the wing base (pic#2). The hind wings each had a circular patch of white in the middle and white scalloped margins. The underside of the wings had white markings. The Thorax had linear stripes of white on the dorsal side. Legs had orange "fur". Last abdominal segment was also orange.

Habitat:

grapevine. Endemic to Australia but now a pest in a few other countries.

Notes:

This attractive moth fluttered around for ages and appeared to land several times on the only grapevine in our backyard. We will be expecting caterpillars soon... In Australia, the Indian Mynah was introduced to control this pest however, this failed and the bird is now considered a pest. I was amused to see an Indian mynah sitting on the back gate watching the moth flutter by !! For the moth's caterpillar have a look at this spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/819...
