Little Pied Cormorant

Microcarbo melanoleucos

Description:

Black above and white below, with mainly white face. Black around eyes and yellow bill that hooks down at the end. Black legs and (webbed) feet. The white plumage almost looks like fur, while the black has a slightly oily iridescent look.

Habitat:

I often see these drying themselves on the rocks around Sandon Point, after sessions of diving in the waves for fish that venture too close to the surface.

Notes:

Also known as the Little Shag, or Kawaupaka. Found not only in Australia, but from Malaysia in the NW to New Zealand in the SE
