Grafted Cactus

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii

Description:

Gymnocalcium mihanovichii, often called 'chin cactus', is a species of cactus from South America, commonly grown as a houseplant. The most popular cultivars, are varied mutants, which completely lack chlorophyll, exposing the red, orange, or yellow pigmentation. These cultivars are often called 'moon cactus'. Since chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis, these mutations die as seedlings, unless grafted onto another cactus, with normal chlorophyll. The popular moon cactus plant, is a small grafted cactus. The two cactus species, most commonly used for moon cactus, are: Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, as the top cactus, and Hylocerus spp., as the base. Plant type: Grafted cactus. Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii Friedrichii, 'Rubra', is commonly known as, 'Hibotan' or 'Moon Cactus'. Hibotan cacti, are native to desert habitats in various parts of South America. There are over 80 species found in Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia. They are a colorful group of succulents, that lack necessary chlorophyll, to produce plant sugars through photosynthesis. For this reason, the plants generally are only one half of an inch across, although there are cultivars, that get up to 8 inches in diameter. Cactus: A succulent plant, with a thick, fleshy stem, that typically bears spines, lacks leaves, and has brilliantly colored flowers. Cacti are native to arid regions of the new world, and are cultivated elsewhere, especially as house plants. A cactus is a kind of plant. They are xerophytes, specializing in hot, dry climates. Cacti are members of the plant family Cactaceae, in the order Caryophyllales. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south, to parts of western Canada, in the north. Many cacti live in dry places, such as deserts. There are many shapes and sizes of cacti. Most cacti have sharp thorns, and thick skin. Some are short and round, others are tall and thin. Many cactus flowers, are big and beautiful. Some cactus flowers, bloom at night, and are pollinated by moths and bats. Some cactus fruits, are brightly colored, and are good to eat. Goats, birds, ants, mice, bats, and people, eat cactus fruit..

Habitat:

The cactus is a most adaptable plant, and can grow well anywhere, that it benefits from appropriate levels of nutrients, moisture, light, and heat. Central Florida, and any other areas, where it can grow and survive. They are found mostly in desert areas. Deserts, grasslands, rain forests, etc. Hot, dry desert. Warm, humid jungle.

Notes:

My friend and I, went to an outdoor garden center, to buy some potted plants with flowers, and some cactus potted plants, to plant in her front yard. This is one of the cactus plants that she bought, and will be planted in her front yard. The bottom part of the cactus, was green. It did not have any spines on it. The top part of the cactus was red, and it had spines on it. The green part, was one and three fourths of an inch, by, one and three fourths of an inch. It was four inches high. The red part, was three and one half inches, by, three and one half inches. It was three inches high. This was a beautiful cactus...
