Hylesia moth

Hylesia sp.

Description:

When disturbed, these moths assume a radical, strange stance, curving its abdomen and throwing its wings forward. When on a flat surface, this stance looks rather weird (as can be seen here: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17...), but in its natural environment it makes much more sense. This medium size moth (around 5cm/2in) looked very much like a dry leaf. Last photo shows it with wings slightly open.

Habitat:

Found in a patch of degraded wood in the outskirts of a small, rural town.
