Eurasian Nuthatch

Sitta europaea

Description:

The Eurasian Nuthatch is a small passerine found throughout temperate Europe and Asia. It belongs to the nuthatch family Sittidae. It is more or less dull in coloration with the exception of the bright orange to rufous chest that can be seen in males as spring approaches.

Notes:

The Nuthatch is referred to as the Eurasian Nuthatch only by birders outside of Europe. In all there are 6 species of Nuthatch that can be found across Europe, but of those 5 are extremely local.

Thanks KD. These little guys were adorable. Took a bit of time to get one close enough for photos, as I never encountered them at feeders, only high in tree tops.
