Clouded Yellow

Colias croceus

Description:

This butterfly is a very strong, powerful migratory species. Large numbers will stream north each year from the breeding grounds of the permanent populations in Southern Europe, where they feed and breed on clover and Lucerne and similar plants.

Habitat:

Clover fields an chalk downs in the south of England

Notes:

This was a solitary specimen that seemed to still be heading northwards. The Clouded Yellow is unlikely to survive a winter in the UK as they can't tolerate temperatures below 5 degrees C
