Red-spotted Purple butterfly

Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Description:

Black butterfly with extensive iridescent blue on topwing, underwing has red-orange spots in submarginal band and at base of wings.

Habitat:

Woodland, yard

Notes:

Host plants cherry and others. This butterfly likes to puddle on mud and animal feces. I see them often on my gravel driveway getting minerals.
