Milkweed Assassin Bug

Zelus longipes

Description:

Red, yellow and black Milkweed Assassin bug (Family Reduviidae) about 2 cm. The first and last pictures shows the extended abdomen from a recent feeding.

Habitat:

Abandoned lot in a semi-urban area on the outskirts of the city, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

Members of the genus Zelus belong to the subfamily Harpactorinae and are diurnal in nature, although the first 3 pictures were taken at night. They are general predators feeding on a wide range of soft-bodied prey in gardens and fields.
