Bluish-grey bill with black tip, red eye and a longish tail. A small red spot is also usually visible on either side of the rump. (See 1st image)
A near threatened species. This endemic sub species has become extinct on the main NZ islands and is now only found on predator free outer islands. These images were taken on Enderby Island in the Auckland Island group.
Sitting enjoying the peace and solitude in the rain and this guy came to say hello - well to be fair, the moment I got up it took off.

Hi Polilla. A number of factors contributed but predation was major. The usual suspects include rats, possums, mustelids and feral cats and birds were highly sought after for the pet trade. We better not start on habitat destruction!!
