Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Description:

Attached are two pictures I took of a Great Horned Owl that had just caught a rabbit. You can even see the rabbit in one of the two pictures. This owl easily had a diameter of 10-12” wide and was about the size of a large turkey. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but it had a wingspan of about four feet!

Habitat:

Marshview Meadows Nature Preserve in the sedge meadow.

Notes:

34*F slightly windy, no precipitation, cloudy.

Wonderful spotting! In the second picture, the silhouette looks almost like a cat in the second photo!

Thanks, Christy. I just saw your comment and I think that I figured out how to properly add the spotting to the Raptors of North America mission. Many different raptors are common in SE Michigan, especially during the famed migration from Canada in early September. I will add more photos whenever possible.

VERY cool shots! That's a hard one to capture!! Welcome to PN!! I'd love you to add this spotting (and any future raptor spottings) to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
