White shouldered hoverfly

Simosyrphus grandicornis

Description:

A hoverfly remains motionless on a gum tree stem in heavy rain. Approximately 18mm long.

Habitat:

The stems of E. microcarpa.

Notes:

I have often wondered what these little syrphids do in heavy rain. Yet to confirm species. Apparently there are several entirely different species and genus that are called 'Common hoverfly' in Australia so I will not put that up top and use the scientific name instead!

Nice series! It's funny how unreal a lot of these insects look under a camera lens.
