Tiger Flower or Flor del Jaguar

Description:

This incredible flower grows wild in the valley of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters. It is rarely over 1 foot tall and blooms only in October. It is called the "Ojo del Toro" (Eye of the Bull) here in Chiapas.

Habitat:

Grassy areas along the roads and highways.

Yes, Leana, it is of the Family Iridaceae and is called the Tiger Flower or the Jaguar Flower.

Thank you Despina for your help with the identification of this flower. I love the published common name of Flor de Jaguar. It is hardly ever in anyone's garden, maybe because it only blooms during October and the flowers are so short lived. It is amazing to see it blooming amongst all the green of the hills.

So pretty! Is this a variety of Iris plant?
