Was this in a saltmarsh? It looks like saltmarsh goldenrod.

Yes, Lisa! I learned that a few months ago when I tried to identify a goldenrod upstate. Practically impossible for a layman!

There are quite a few (100+) species of goldenrod native to North America. They can be tricky to identify.
