Description:

This trogonidae is considered one of the most beautiful birds of the American Continent. The mesoamerican o resplendent Quetzal is the National Bird of Guatemala, a sacred bird for the Maya people. It is a medium-sized bird 36–40 cm long. The male, has a serpentine tail up to 65 cm long.the build their nest in dead trunks, Juveniles feeds on small vertebrates and insect as a good source of protein then as adults they prefer wild avocados fruits (Ocotea sp) which they swallows, then regurgitate the seeds, which contributes to the dispersal of these tree species. The pictures shows a juvenile male trying to eat a fruit.

Habitat:

Cloud forest from Mexico to Panama, The resplendent quetzal is classified as near threatened on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss.
