The dark-grey reef heron (matuku moana) eats small fish, crabs and molluscs, which they catch with a clever ploy: they spread their wings around in front and snap up the fish, which are attracted to the temporary shadow. This bird was spotted at Houghton bay, and unfortunately he didn't stay long, on the rocks of the west side, but flew to the direction of Waitaha cove...
