Sharp-shinned Hawk (juvenile)

Accipiter striatus

Description:

The smallest hawk in North America, Accipiter striatus, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, is a close relative to Accipiter cooperi, Cooper's Hawk. The Sharp-shinned Hawk can generally be distinguished by its smaller size, pencil-like legs, square-ended tail, and more barring on the breast. This individual swooped on a feeding Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) who inadvertently became the meal of the day.

Habitat:

Right in my front yard; coniferous/deciduous woodlands near swampland.

Notes:

Lifer! Photo credit goes to my mother and father.
