Amphibolips quercusinanis
Found this odd little orb on the ground, attached to a leaf. The skin of it was relatively tough, and inside was filled with a webbed structure.

Oh no, does that mean that the larva will die because I opened up the gall? I did not dissect the center, where I am assuming the larva lives.
Thank you for the information. This little blob had me perplexed. I thought that it was attached to a maple leaf, but it was difficult to tell because I only found a fragment.
Hi Jocelyn. This interesting structure is a gall that is produced by the larva of a tiny wasp. The leaf that it is attached to is actually an oak leaf. This means, that your spotting should go in the Arthropods section. :-)
This would be a great addition to the Arthropod Galls of the North East mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1473...
