Taxodium distichum
My favorite feature on this hike/Park Quest in Pocomoke River State Park! These "knees" grow above ground, from the top part of the roots of Bald Cypress trees. One theory for their existence is that they help provide oxygen to the roots. Another theory is that they help provide support by stiffening and and strengthening the roots, acting like an anchor. There are several other theories, but basically the function of these knees are still a mystery!

I didn't either before I saw them on this hike - and I was SO fascinated! I could have taken pictures of them all day. :-)
I never...never...never ...knew such things existed. Thank you. Bernadette. AND Thank you PN!
