Desert penstemon

Penstemon parryi

Description:

Bright pink trumpet-shaped flowers on a foot-high stalk

Habitat:

Dry, sandy riverbottom.

Notes:

This is the first and only penstemon seen this year. It's very unusual to have it blossoming so early, but it's been an unusually warm winter. Global warming? We have had no rain for almost 2 months, but did get a couple of good soakings in the fall, which encourages the wildflowers. King Canyon is famous for its glorious spring display.
