Black-Tailed Prairie Dog

Cynomys ludovicianus

Description:

These prairie dogs had complex underground tunnel systems that covered a large area of land on the sides of the roads out in the Oklahoma panhandle. The one pictured was on top of a hole several feet from the road. Most of the other prairie dogs did not let me get that close; they barked a sound and then ran down in their hole before I got close enough for a picture.

Habitat:

Dry, mainly dirt fields on on the sides of the road in the Oklahoma panhandle.
