Queen Butterfly

Description:

This butterfly was spotted on the Pine Creek Trail in Red Rock Canyon. It and several Monarch Butterflies (to which it bears a similar pattern on the underwing) were feeding as noted in the photos. This species ranges from the southern US (in this case Southern Nevada) down into central and South America.

Habitat:

This butterfly was spotted in a riparian area in the Mojave Desert at the base of the Spring Mountain range.
