Congratulations Linda, your spectacular Scarlet Mormon larva is our Spotting of the Day:

"This striking larva of a Scarlet Mormon butterfly (Papilio rumanzovia), complete with extra spider, is our Spotting of the Day! This is the pre-pupal stage of the larva, which rests on the surface of a stem as the last instar of the caterpillar comes to an end. Earlier instars of the caterpillar are more spiky in appearance. False eyes at a caterpillar's front have been shown to act as a deterrent to birds".
