Cane Toad

Rhinella marina

Description:

A large warty 'true' toad, (up to 24cm/1.5kg). Generally dark brown to mottled browns. Has a pair of large parotoid glands running form the side if its head down to its shoulder which secrete a milky venom.

Habitat:

Native to northern South America. Very opportunistic and highly adaptive this species has thrived in deforested Amazonian areas. Very tolerant of saline water and breeds incredibly quickly. This spotting inside a cabin near Tarapoto, Peru.

Notes:

Widely introduced to other countries in a misguided attempt to control other pest species. This toad has become a serious pest in itself. Its poisonous nature has caused a major threat to other species especially in areas where the local fauna has had no exposure to the toads toxin (Auatralia/PNG etc.), not to mention the toads voracious appetite for just about anything it can swallow. Ref: USGS - nonindigenous aquatic species - cane toad.
