Eastern cottontail

Sylvilagus floridanus

Description:

Eastern cottontails are a gray to brown color with white tails and abdomens. They have large ears and large brown eyes for listening and looking for predators. On average their weight is around 2.6 pounds. The males and females do not differ much in size. Predators of the eastern cottontails are cats, dogs, fox, coyote, bobcat, snakes, owls, hawks and raccons. When chased by a predator the eastern cottontail runs in a zigzag formation and can reach speeds up to 18 mph.

Habitat:

The eastern cottontail can be found around farms, meadows, pastures, any area that has an open field with thick brush around the perimeter. They are usually not found in dense or deep wooded areas.
