Plain Chachalaca

Ortalis vetula

Description:

A large brown bird with loud repeted calls. Long tailed and arboreal. This is the only member of the family Cracidae (guans, currasows, and chachalacas) to be found in the States. There are red bare patches on the feace and throat which can be seen in this photo.

Habitat:

Rio Grande valley forest.
