Orange Peel Fungus

Aleuria aurantia

Description:

I was very surprised to see this burst of bright orange erupting from the sandy soil of the Oilsand region of Northern Alberta in late October, with winter coming and most other plant life gone. Although each fungus was quite small, as can be seen in relation to the sand granules, there were large patches growing widespread accross the landscape. Hopefully I have identified it correctly.
