Black-headed Heron

Ardea melanocephala

Description:

Large wader, about 90 cm tall, with 170cm of wingspan. Black crown and hindneck contrast with white throat. The rest of the body covered with grey feathers - here seen wearing a full breeding regalia.

Habitat:

Widespread and common in all sub-Saharan Africa, here seen roosting in trees bordering the Nile river in central Khartoum. There were few couples of Black-headed, Great white and Little egret on the same tree.
