Oncomeris sp.
A "giant shield bug" (Family Tessaratomidae) measuring approximately 35-40 mm from the tip of head to end of abdomen. Identified to genus level visually. In Papua there are apparently just two possible species http://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20ord... Oncomeris chrysoptera http://www.heteroptera.fr/tessite/Oncome... and O. flavicornis http://www.heteroptera.fr/tessite/Oncome... . The color of the pronotum in the present spotting specimen differs slightly from those specimen images in the above links.
Spotted on yellow walking iris (Neomarica longifolia) in a large semi-urban yard & garden in close proximity to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest.
Thanks Magnien for your determination. I want to familiarize myself with the anatomy so I understand it.
The two proposed species can be separated by the color of the cubital vein of the hemelytra, concolor for flavicornis, yellow for chrysoptera
Superb series & totally delightful creature! I love those poppers/buttons on his gorgeous red jacket! (last photo)
