Dwarf butterfly orchid

Prosthechea pygmaea

Description:

One of the rarest orchids that can be found in North America is Prosthechea pygmaea (dwarf butterfly orchid). The flower is tiny, about the size of a thumb's nail. Most of their flowers don't open up all the way, so we were lucky to find this little jewel early in October.

Habitat:

Epiphytic orchid found in sloughs among pop ash and pond apple trees.
