Cisthene Moth

Cisthene unifascia

Description:

This species is quite variable in color and in the width and shape of the yellow band on the forewing. Some specimens are heavily suffused with gray of brown. Makes do not have the projecting lobe on the hind wing.

Habitat:

Range: Southern Great Plains

Notes:

This porch light visitor didn't stay long. It was about an inch long. The following spp. are in Texas per Knudson & Bordelon (2004) Cisthene subrufa - Common and apparently endemic to the Rio Grande Valley and adj. Mex. Cisthene conjuncta - Most common along south Texas coast Cisthene tenuifascia - Common throughout much of Texas. Males have small lobe on anal margin of HW Cisthene unifascia - Quite variable Cisthene picta - Common in southwestern Texas, especially in desert habitats. Occasional in Rio Grande Valley
