Diamondback Water Snake

Nerodia rhombifer

Description:

Diamondback Water Snake spotted on the golf course of Maxwell AFB, AL. I stumbled upon this snake, surprising both of us, and it fled into a small pond which it refused to leave until after I did...

Notes:

Apparently this snake is often confused with the venomous Cottonmouth, or Water Moccasin.

Brown water snakes have thicker blotches, and don't have red eyes like this snake has.
