Black Rat Snake

Genus: Elaphe Species: obsoleta obsoleta

Description:

Black meduim sized snake up to 6 feet in length, constrictor. Timid, but will bite if handled, NONVENOMOUS. Will tame down after initial contact. Keeled scales.

Habitat:

Widely spread in Indiana, This particular snake was on my back patio and is still living in my yard. Normal home is in forest, and sometimes out buildings.

Notes:

Main menu is rodents, popular with farmers, who like to have them in their barns. Will eat lizards & baby birds
