Gray Catbird

Dumetella carolinensis

Description:

Medium-sized thrushlike songbird with a long tail. Gray overall with a darker cap and cinnamon undertail coverts.

Habitat:

Woodland trail at local botanical gardens.

Notes:

Gray Catbird often hides in the shrubbery, making an odd variety of musical and harsh sounds -- including the catlike mewing responsible for its name. It is able to mimic the vocalizations of several other birds and other animals, for example, frogs.
