Purple Swamphen

Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus

Description:

The size of a small hen, these birds have a beautiful purplish blue breast and belly. Their wings are darker as are their tail feathers. The head shield is a bright orange.

Habitat:

Lake - Nature Reserve

Notes:

Although the feet have no webbing, these birds are said to be strong swimmers. They can also fly long distances. They pick the food off the ground with their feet, to eat and not peck off the ground.
