Budding Tube Lichen

Hypogymnia enteromorpha


A large specimen (50 cm wide) showing off an intricate wavy pattern. top surface is pale to light green at the margins. Black specs and mostly black underneath. The apothecium is brown seen in pic 3 was found on a different specimen in the same tree.


Spotted several nice specimens in a fallen spruce tree next to a creek at Ruby Beach. This lichen has a forked distribution, occurring from Alaska south on the Pacific coast to northern California and from Alaska south through interior British Columbia to Idaho and Montana. It is widespread and conspicuous in sunny, open or partially shaded sites on coniferous bark.
