Treehopper

Umbonia sp.

Description:

Large Treehopper, about 1 cm long, very colorful. The 5th picture is of a female sitting on top of her eggs. The 6th picture shows the nymph. Family Membracidae. In Spanish, these are called "Toritos" (little bulls).

Habitat:

On a woody plant with hairy leaves, Rancho Nuevo Park, 10 km west of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

The specimen I collected in the field and brought home for more pictures, changed color from the rather pale brownish orange to a really dark orange brown in the 3 days I had it in a jar on a stick. You can compare the close-ups to the picture of the female sitting on her eggs (5th picture). I don't think it was a lighting phenomena.
