Nigella sp.
This strange and alien looking blue flower grows on a spindly vine like plant with thin narrow leaves. The fruit looks almost like an opium pod. This plant is not common and I haven't seen it again.
On the grounds of a hotel on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
This is also called "Devil in the Bush". I guess it is hard to decide whether the flower is beautiful or really weird. Maybe both. It is native to southern Europe, northern Africa and south-southwest Asia and the seeds are used as a spice. Family Ranunculaceae.
We grow it as an annual in UK ... very pretty flowers & foliage Lauren, pink, blue, white plus there is a double form. Seed pods are a lovely shape : )
Wow Viv, that was fast! I am delighted to know what this is and fascinated that the seeds are used as a spice. Now I wish I would have saved some seeds!
Thank you.
