Limenitis arthemis astyanax
Dark butterfly with bright blue margins and reddish-orange markings. Often mistaken for swallowtail butterflies due to similar coloration. This one was seen with two other butterfly species "puddling" in the mud next to a lake. Butterflies puddle in order to ingest important minerals they are unable to get from nectar. They may feed at mud, feces, tears, sweat, etc.
Border of temperate woodlands and man made lake. Rockwood Park, Virginia.
