Acronicta sp.
Mimicry is a very effective protection. If an animal don't have sharp fangs, claws or venom, to blend into the scenery increases its chances of survival. Another form of mimicry is to LOOK like something dangerous. And that this rather large caterpillar (7,5 cm, 3 in long) does extraordinarily well. Its body is covered with short hair that looks like velvet, distributed in dark and medium brown and tan stripes. The creamy white marks over its head look like fangs in a half open mouth. If I was a small critter, that look would scare me. As a second thought, it scares even a bigger guy like me!
Yes, I know it, and I like it a lot. Unfortunately, it focuses on US species only, so it is hard to get info about south american species.
Omg! This this agger moth caterpillar freaks me out!!! Brrr! Great shots!!
Cool, glad it helped, that site is awesome for finding out the proper names of bugs and such.
Thank you very much, Antondazomb. I'll keep its name in the genus level, ok?
