Brainerd's Hawthorn

Crataegus brainerdii

Description:

Low growing tree. Smooth bark with long thorns. Shallowly lobed leaves with serrated edges. Small orange/red colored fruit produced from flowers. Rose Family. This plant was afflicted with Cedar-Hawthron Rust (Gymnosporangium globosum) which is what is causing the reddish-brown spots on the leaves.

Habitat:

Whirlpool State Park, Niagara Falls, New York. Growing "cliffside" of the Niagara River.
